I know a lot of people have been wanting this for a long time, so finally here it is!

To install, simply extract z_Sounds.pak to your MechWarrior Online/Game folder, nothing gets overwritten.  To uninstall, remove z_Sounds.pak

NOTE:  This mod is still incomplete.  I need to edit, fix, and add some more things, so I'll keep this thread and post updated with changes and additions.

BEHIND THE SCENES:

So this was a LOT of work...and when I say a lot, I mean hours upon hours of making this work right.  I extracted all the original MechWarrior 2 sounds (Titanium Edition) manually from the PRJ file from the game itself.  The problem was a lot of these sounds when exported, had pops and crackles in them that were very distorting.  Here's an example of the Clan Medium Pulse Laser sound effect:

Notice the dips in the waveform towards the end.  This creates the pop you hear.  And this was a problem with just about every file from MechWarrior 2.  So in order to fix this, every file had to be hand edited to redraw the waveform where it was glitched, like so:

Needless to say it was quite an extensive project going through each one and fixing them by hand.  Then there was the matter of making them work for MWO in general.  A lot of sounds are played differently in MWO compared to MechWarrior 2, so I had to edit the sounds in various ways so they'd work in MWO, such as pitching sounds up or down for correct playback in MWO, combining a lot of the Bitching Betty voices for things like "such and such Destroyed", creating new loops and loop points, adding "silence" to some sounds to avoid looping (like overheat alarm), and even speeding up slightly some of the sounds, or the game would cut them off for being too long.

What's the point?  Well I guess there really isn't any other than "damn dat shite took forever" =P.  It was a ton of work and not easy, I figured some people would be interested in how it was done.

Decided to answer here some of the questions I've been getting on Reddit and elsewhere (no I don't have a Reddit, sorry xD)

First of all wanted to thank everyone for the support, and I'm really happy everyone loves the mod so far ^^  Oh and since it has been requested by a couple people already, here is MechWarrior 2 Bitching Betty combined with the PEW mod =D

Q & A

Q:  Will you replace the MWO music with MW2 music?
A:  Yes I had this planned, just figuring out how to go about it.  One of the ideas was to actually replace the winning music at the end of a match with "Mission - Successful" and the losing music with "Mission - Failed"

Q:  Why are the MW2 sounds in MWO quieter than normal sounds?
A:  Due to the MW2 sounds being in 8bit, mono, at 11025hz, they are already amplified as loud as they can be without clipping and causing pops, crackles, or distortion.  Nothing I can do about this unfortunately.  I already converted the sounds to 16bit so they'd play correctly in MWO, but changing the frequency to something like 44100 actually makes the sounds sound worse ironically.  If Bitching Betty is too low, best way to fix is to increase the Dialogue volume slider above the other audio sliders.

Q:  Does this modify game files?
A:  No, none of the original files of the game are modified.

Q:  Bitching Betty no longer alerts me about some things like when my base is being captured.
A:  This is correct, as there were no alternatives in MechWarrior 2 for things like "base being captured" and "airstrike activated, uav activated" etc, so I muted all other sounds that there were no alternatives for, as to avoid having 2 bitching betty's talking in game which would feel awkward and break immersion.  There was also nothing I could replace "X ammo depleted" with.  However I decided to create "ammo critical", cutting out "ammo" from the line in MW2 "internal ammo explosion detected" and combine it with "critical", for all ammo that hits 25%.  I did this because even though there are never any ammunition level warnings in MW2 by default, the intro to MW2 does have Betty saying "ammunition level critical", so I feel this is appropriate and in tune with the style of MechWarrior 2.  It keeps you on your toes as you have to pay attention now, which is how it was in original MW2.

Q:  The weapons don't sound/work right on HPG Manifold
A:  Yes, I plan to fix this in the next update.  Due to how the game changes the sounds for that map in particular, I'm not sure I can 100% fix it but I'll do what I can.

Q:  What else do you have planned for this mod?
A:  For the full version of the mod, I want to add the MechWarrior 2 weapon hit FX like lasers and AC's hitting mechs, footstep sounds, the mech throttle increase and decrease sounds (which personally I love, that oldskool metal whir grinding noises, yum), EXPLOSION sounds, even torso twisting sounds and the like.  Oh and the music of course =)

Q:  Does Shivaxi even read /r/outreachhpg ?
A:  Yes I've been paying attention =P

Q:  What sounds are replaced in the HUD & Cockpit version?
A:  Currently the zoom, target beep, radar blips when a mech shows up on radar, and when leaving radar, missile lock, critical damage alert, incoming missile alert, overheat alert, HUD start up, and HUD shut down.

Q:  Will updates to MWO break this mod?
A:  It is possible yes, but I'll do my best to keep this mod up to date.

Q:  Why does it say "enemy mech detected" when I target a mech instead of "target acquired"?
A:  Original MechWarrior 2 had no voice for targeting mechs, it was only a hud beep.  In fact Bitching Betty doesn't say the word "acquired" at all in MechWarrior 2.  The best I could do was combine a couple of the Bitching Betty voices for "enemy mech detected" which is an edit of "enemy mech power up detected" from MW2.

Hope that's everything.  Again I'm overwhelmed by the awesome response to this, so thank you guys again!  Enjoy =)

EDIT:

I forgot to say, in response to a few people saying how the sounds all sound mono...well they are xD  The original game sounds were in mono, and in order to make them sound stereo, the only thing I could do would to put some virtual effect on the sound like reverb or other "spatialize" effect, like a virtual surround effect.  But to me this would be a corny thing to do and wouldn't sound that great anyway.  I wanted to keep the sounds true to the original =)

EDIT TWO:

Q:  What happened to the warhorn sounds?!
A:  This is accidental, and not something I can completely avoid. Some of the original MWO sounds get sped up upon initial export. So when re-compiling, they are sped up in-game. There is not much I can do about this, other than going through each warhorn and sped up sound, and manually slowing them back down. I may do this in the future...or I can just replace all warhorn sounds with TheB33f's "HAW HAW HAWWW"

I think this is a great mod I use it now for MWO and glad to see more on the way. If you ever decide too to another I think the sound effects from Mech commander 2 would be awesome also the power up and down sound from Mechwarrior 4 would be a nice touch. Keep up the good work.

Actually I was just thinking....would it be possible to make a 'enemy aircraft detected' or 'enemy dropship detected' for airstrikes / arty? I'm using the bitching betty / cockpit sounds now and it's fucking epic dude. Grade A stuff!

Hang on I'm gonna do that right now for v1.1 which I should have out later today

EDIT: Ah wait, yeah there's no call in MWO for anything about the enemy's airstrike or arty strikes. It's only when you use an airstrike or something MWO says "Airstrike Activated". I could cut out "enemy" though and make mw2 bb say something like "Aircraft Detected" for arty and airstrikes. Not sure, I'll mess around =P

EDIT 2: OH MAN wait, for launching a UAV, I think BB in MW2 says something like "satellite uplink" haha, that'd work for UAV launch xD

-Fixed Clan Machine Guns not looping correctly
-Added missing MW2 sound effect for LB 10-X AC (IS)
-Fixed weapon sounds for HPG Manifold (IS & CLAN)
-Edited SRM fire sound (IS & CLAN) to sound like it's firing once instead of twice to match the way SRM's work in MWO
-Was able to increase the volume of the following sound effects without clipping the waveform - missile lock, IS medium laser
-Side effect of fixing internal firing sounds, some weapon firing sounds are louder now.  Applies mainly to PPC's and Gauss (IS & CLAN)
-Fixed ER PPC destroyed message. Now says "ER Particle Cannon Destroyed" instead of just "Particle Cannon Destroyed"
-Forgot to mute "LB 10 Ammo Depleted" sound, fixed

No ETA, it will take me some time, plus I got a lot of other projects going on atm.  I'll get to it, especially now that PGI has declared the mod legal to use which is awesome! =D \o/
